Ganesha is the Hindu god of wisdom, beginnings, and remover of obstacles, easily recognized by his elephant head and human body.
Origins and Birth
Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, or Pillaiyar, is the son of Shiva and Parvati and the brother of Kartikeya. One popular legend describes Parvati creating Ganesha from clay or the dirt of her body to guard her while she bathed. When Shiva returned and was blocked by Ganesha, he beheaded the boy in anger. To appease Parvati, Shiva replaced Ganesha’s head with that of an elephant, giving him his iconic form.
