In Greek mythology, Atlas is a Titan who carries the sky upon his shoulders. He is the son of Iapetus and Clymene, and is often depicted as a strong, muscular figure struggling to carry the enormous weight of the heavens. Atlas is punished by Zeus for his participation in the Titanomachy, a ten-year war between the Titans and the Olympian gods. After the Titans’ defeat, Atlas is condemned to bear the Earth and sky on his shoulders for eternity.
