Description

Russian Cross is a variation of the Christian cross with two crossbeams, of which the higher one is horizontal and longer, and the lower one is diagonal to the rest of the cross. In the Russian Orthodox Church, the inclination of the lower crossbar is viewed as the crossbar of the balance, one point of which is raised as a sign of the penitent thief. The other crucified thief, who blasphemed at Jesus Christ, is indicated by the lower point of the crossbar, tilted downward. The Russian Cross is used only by the Russian Orthodox Church and never spread to western Europe.

Cross of Jerusalem stand for the four virtues of prudence, strength, moderation, and justice.  The four arms divide into eight points which symbolize the blessings of the Beatitudes.  The poor in spirit shall have the kingdom of heaven.  Those who mourn shall be comforted.  The meek shall inherit the Earth.  Those who hunger for righteousness will be satisfied.  The merciful will be given mercy.  The pure shall see God.  The peacemakers will be called the children of God, and those persecuted for right will have the Kingdom of Heaven.  The Cross of Jerusalem represents the teachings of Christ while he lived more than the crucifixion.

Tuareg Cross people is a four-direction cross, not a Christian cross. The circle on the top means the Sun, the Full Moon, the Life Cycle and the Earth itself. The four arms of the cross stand for the four ages of man, the four directions, the four seasons and the four religions known to the Tuareg people: Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the Ancient African Way of the Spirits.

Renaissance Crucifix in this style first appeared in Italy during the Renaissance. They were more refined and ornate than medieval crosses, and were intended to show, in the richness of their style, the Lordly aspect of Christ’s divinity. They were more realistic than medieval crosses.  This gave them a greater power to invoke Jesus’ suffering on the forces, and to remind those who wore them that it is their sins that were the reason why Jesus had to be crucified. The letters INRI mean: “Hail Jesus, King of Jews”.  These were Roman words the Christians would say “Praise Jesus, King of Kings.”

Cross Cross is a symbol of the redemption of the world’s sins through the death of the Lord Jesus. The Celtic Cross is much older than that. It shows a circle on a cross. The four quarters it forms point to the four directions. To the North lies wisdom, silence, Winter and death. To the East lies rebirth, youth, Spring and growth.  To the South lies vitality, vigor, Summer and strength. To the West lies knowledge, experience, Autumn and guidance.  The circle which connects them is the cycle of the eternal returns of all these things. The Celtic Cross symbolizes both the love of Christ, and the ways of the ancient religion.

Ornate Cross symbolizes reconciliation with God through faith in Christ, whose life, death and Resurrection are proof of God’s forgiveness of human sin. After the conversion of Constantine the Great it became the principal symbol of Christianity and stands for both the actual Crucifixion of Christ and the concept of the Christian Church. It is also one of the oldest and most universal symbols representing both the four astrological elements of earth, water, fire and air, as well as the directions of north, east, south and west. To the North lie wisdom, silence, winter and death. To the East lie rebirth, youth, spring and growth. To the South lie vitality, vigor, summer and strength. To the West lie knowledge, experience, autumn and guidance. The Cross, thus, symbolizes both the love of Christ and the ways of the ancient people before Him.

Ethiopian Cross is one of the oldest types of crosses in the world. It probably dates back to pre-Christian times, when the cross symbol meant something different than it does to Christians. The Ancient Cross was a symbol of the four directions of the world. To the East; spring and youth. To the South; adolescence and power, To the West;  middle age and power. To the North; old age and wisdom. The Cross has meaning for many religions and cultures. It is one of the most enduring and widespread symbols known in the world.

Medieval Crucifix is a reproduction of a archaeological find from the Middle Ages.  In those days, the crucifix was thought to have the power to avert bad influences, and almost everybody had one.  In those days, you kissed your cross, made the sign of the cross, and held out your cross to protect yourself from evil influences.

It was found by St. Francis of Assissi in the chapel of San Damiano, not far from Assissi.  St. Francis repaired the chapel with his own hands, as it had fallen down almost completely, The cross was broken into several pieces.  When St. Francis saw the broken cross, he wept, and began to repair it. Today the Chapel of San Damiano is a place of pilgrimage for Christians of all kinds. St. Francis was the first to see the beauty of God, in the sun was a brother, the moon, a sister.
