Description

The Southwestern Collection

The Lizard - (various designs) is a spirit messenger and guide who teaches us the value of solitude and stillness. Brother Lizard can lie on a rock all day under the sun, just watching. His bursts of action are always directed towards a purpose. He does not spend his energy on play. His adamant purpose receives all of his attention, no matter what it is. The Native American Elders knew that stillness and unbending attention could open up a person's consciousness. If a person stares at anything long enough, as does Brother Lizard, their vision will break down, and they will see a different world. This practice, easy to understand, but very difficult to do, is one of the paths a person can take to become a medicine man or woman.

The Turtle - (various designs) is one of the oldest symbols of the Earth. The turtle withdraws into its shell, and in this way it teaches us how to withdraw into ourselves, and to create our own protective spaces. The Turtle is a spirit messenger, always telling us to be grounded, to go slowly, to look to ourselves for safety, to do what we must, but not to get caught up in the flow of things that are outside our power to direct. Above all, the remember the Earth. Many traditions, including those of the native American Indians, the Hindus and the Buddhists believe that the Earth rests on the back of a huge turtle which makes its home in the cosmic waters. Native peoples of North American stall call their land Turtle Island, and honor it as the Earth itself.

Kokopelli - (various designs) was the scion of the peoples of the southwest US.  Playing his flute, he wandered with the nations following him. He taught the people how to grow corn, giving them life. He taught them music and sacred songs, making one bundle of all his people. He taught them the way of peace, and until the coming of the white people, the Hopi lived in peace. Kokopelli lived in times out of mind, yet his legacy continues as Southwestern Native Americans still carry on the ways he taught them.

The Bear Paw - (various designs) is the mark of the Bear. It shows that the place where it appears is his territory. The bear hibernates in winter teaching people the value of retreat into introspection. The bear’s strength is hard for people to imagine. It can kill an animal half its weight with one blow. The Bear is close to humans, eating the same foods and sometimes standing on two legs. The bear is our brother, and his paw mark means that his presence is available to us, to teach introspection and warriorship.

The Wolf - (various designs) wolf packs is a symbol of Community. Wolves, united, can migrate, hunt, and sleep in groups. In their Unity, wolves need not fear any natural enemy. They all help to raise the pups together. Wolves also fight among themselves at times, reminding us that to live or work with a group, we need not give up our individuality. Wolves rely of their speed and endurance to hunt. They have been known to run over thirty miles to tire their prey, and can bring down animals much larger than themselves. Like people, Wolves, united can never be defeated.

The Eagle - (various designs) are the sacred and mysterious messengers who carry prayers to the Great Spirit and return with the visions and insights that help the nations of the world. The Eagle flies higher than any other bird, and its keen vision is a symbol of Human Awareness. The Eagle is the spirit of the East; the place of Sunrise, from whence comes the illumination that dispels darkness. “On the back of Brother Eagle, Grandfather. I send a Voice; Crying that the People should live.” Eagle Feathers are also sacred object to the American Indian peoples. No bird flew higher. No bird sees farther. An eagle feather was given to a warrior who performed an act of bravery. Not just any brave action earned brother Eagle’s feather. It had to be performed to protect or help one of his fellow warriors, or his tribe. Even today, among Native Americans, the eagle feather is considered so full of medicine, or spirit power, that if one touches the ground or floor it must be purified by a special ceremony by a medicine man or woman. The eagle is the awareness of the people, and its feather holds the energy of the highest wisdom, the wisdom which pits the protection of one’s people higher than one’s own life.

The Coyote - (various designs) is a spirit helper for those who hunt its power. Hunting its power means learning it’s movements, understanding its habits and contemplating its cries. Coyotes are solitary animals, coming together only to mate and to hunt those animals too large for them to take alone. In spite of their fierce ways, coyotes are also deeply maternal towards their young, and thus are a symbol of protection.

The Dragonfly - (various designs) Each of our animal relatives carries with it a special power. The dragonfly’s power is skill.  If the dragonfly comes to you, she is telling you to improve one of your skills, or to show more of the care which the skillful put into whatever they do. Skillful action brings abundance, prosperity and harmony. Dragonflies have the ability to hover, fly straight up or down, forwards and backwards. They show amazing skills to those who take the time to watch them. They are adroit hunters, catching any insect who shows less skill in flight. Dragonflies are metamorphic, changing from pupae to larva and into their winged form, these changes tuned to their passages through life. May you act with skillful means, and may you respond to the passage of time with changes in in yourself.
